Welcome — before you begin
Congratulations on your new Trezor device. This page walks you through the full startup process — unboxing, initial boot, creating (or restoring) a wallet, and important safety checks. Read each step carefully and make sure you complete the checks marked Important.
What you’ll need
- Your Trezor device and the included USB cable.
- A computer or mobile device with a supported browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox recommended).
- A secure place to write down your recovery seed (do not store the seed digitally).
- Stable internet connection for downloading Trezor Suite or using the web installer.
Step‑by‑step startup (quick overview)
- Inspect the package: confirm the box seal is intact and contents match the list in the manual.
- Download Trezor Suite: go to the official site and download the latest Trezor Suite (or use the official web onboarding).
- Connect the device: plug the Trezor into your computer using the supplied cable.
- Follow the on‑screen prompts in Trezor Suite to create a new wallet or restore an existing one.
- Write down the recovery seed: store it offline in a secure place. Never share it.
- Verify your device: always check the model and firmware version shown on the Trezor screen match expected values in the Suite.
Detailed setup
When you first connect the device, your computer will detect a new USB device and Trezor Suite will prompt you through the onboarding flow. The onboarding carefully guides you to install the official firmware and to either create a new seed or restore one from an existing backup.
Create a new wallet
Choose Create a new wallet if this is your first Trezor. Trezor will generate a recovery seed — a series of words that can restore your wallet if your device is lost or destroyed. Important: write the words exactly as shown, in order, on the supplied recovery card or on a safe offline medium.
Restore an existing wallet
If you already have a recovery seed from another device, select Restore wallet. Carefully enter each recovery word on the device when prompted. Verify the addresses shown in Trezor Suite match what you expect from your accounts.
Security best practices
- Never type or store your recovery seed on a computer, phone, or cloud storage.
- Do not share your recovery seed, PIN, or passphrase with anyone — not even support staff.
- Use a passphrase (hidden wallet) only if you understand the tradeoffs; losing the passphrase means losing access permanently.
- When asked to confirm an address, always verify the full address on the Trezor device display — not just in the Suite window.
Troubleshooting
If your device doesn’t power on, try a different USB cable or port. If the Suite reports an unexpected firmware state—do not proceed until you confirm the firmware download comes from the official source. For persistent issues, consult the official support pages or community resources.
After setup — recommended next steps
- Enable firmware updates when prompted; official updates improve security and compatibility.
- Move small test amounts first before transferring large sums to your new wallet.
- Consider storing your recovery seed in two geographically separated secure locations (steel backup recommended for long‑term storage).
